Your Suggestions Box

Dear Readers,

Instead of suggesting me on various matters at many unrelated places, why not you centralize your thoughts, suggestions, inputs over here? This will provide me a single point of reference to make further improvements.

Do not use this space for any other purpose.

Do not hesitate or feel shy. Just write what you think, not what I would think or how would I react. Do your job and let me do mine.

Thanks again

  1. Sir,
1- Is it possible to make the pages on ‘ auto refresh’ ?
2- Can a page be created and dedicated for your Reader to Reader reply? Thought of this after seeing Pawan’s post missing your sell call . It may save your precious time.

  2. Adarniya Sir,

CAIRN ( BSE: 532792 | NSE: CAIRN ) is a favorite stock in your list as you have often said. If you ever afford time to suggest us the entry range for a LT hold.
I have put just 50 shares bought @ 168.50 in my elder son’s a/c as a gift but would love to add small quantities in many steps depending upon fund availability.

Very good strategy. The company has finally gone into production, even if trial. Commercial production in full swing should be expected in 6 months, preferably before next monsoon.

The stock has lot of upside. Buy it in 3 steps and then keep quiet.
    First Purchase 50@168.50 (CMP = Rs 280)
The upside is very high.I will cover this aspect in recommendation next week.
    Second Purchase : 30 shares at CMP 280 = + Rs 84r00 New investment
    Third Purchase : 20 shares @ 385 or more = + Rs 7,700

Set the short term target at about 520 to 560. If the performance is still good, raise the bar(target) by 60% more or Rs 800 or about. If that target is achieved, sell 50%.You will recover your full capital + 60% profit. Balance 50 shares at that time will be your floating profit. Let it multiply. Sell it at your will.

  4. Dear Sir,

I feel we now have too many columns. I would like to read whatever you write and reply to other readers.

One of the thing that in my opinion should be done is that readers can comment on only two or three column. In my opinion, CMCA, suggestion box, and the column related to your book. This is because when you reply
to some one we can read it. Otherwise, we have to go to every column, read the comments to check if you have written something new.

Other suggestion is that it will be better if you merge NASA with the new column on breaking news. Also provide RSS feed separately for these columns.

    Regards,
    v8r, Stockholm.

I agree with your point. I was trying to find plug in that would consolidate all comments at one place, but could not find one. I do get all comments at one place for my administration purpose, and that is why I am able to reply to almost all queries anywhere. If such facility is available to the reader, then your time and efforts will be saved.

If that does not work out, I will cut down the columns to a few as suggested by you. Thanks for your suggestion.

  6. sir,
It is a nice idea to group all the queries and replies by plugging together. May I also suggest to add another button to link to your earlier posts. I appreciate your timely recommendations and suggest that a space in the beginning be provided for any breaking news like new posts or warnings if any be provided so that readers like me could take the benefit immediately. Please keep up this good job in spite of your busy schedule.

  7. Dear Sir,

Regarding the reply plug in, it is great except that we have to make sure that we have not missed any of your replies. This means that we have to go through older comments.

One way could be that once a thread is older by some number of days, no body will post any thing in that thread.

The other way can be that each day there is a list of links pointing to your replies. After all, your readers just want to make sure they have not missed any thing you have written. The caveat may be the feasibility of its implementation.

    Regards,
    v8r, Stockholm.

  12. Dear Kalidas,

Belated wishes for your birthday – when was the actual date? – i’m a october-born too .. hence curiosity :-)

    Suggestion :
i see many questions repeated by different viewers. Like I’ve myself asked you questions on LICHF when you had made it clear in an earlier reply on your views. But it gets a little difficult to track down older replies. So suggestion is to put up a tabular column for stocks which are repeatedly queried upon.
table would include – stock name, your call on it, sensible price for it , expected returns (your view) & when you change your call (say from sell to buy) then you could give a link to the reply where you’d have elaborate on it. You could probably put this table at the top of the CMCA section so that readers can look at your views from there instead of repeatedly posting same queries.

I know that i might be asking for too much :-) but i do hope that searching through the replies becomes easier.

without any wish to offend any fellow boarder and I am extremely sorry if it happens, it is being noticed with great concern to me that some learned boarders have started replying to questions put to you or interacting directly with them on this board.Considering the fact that many of us visit this place exclusively for you, where as for fellow boarders advises cab be exchanged at the money control board which still exists,it would be wiser for fellow boarders to leave this place marked for you only as no boarder can match you. This will also help to find only your answers and suggestions.

  22. Dear Shri Selarka,
With increasing interest in your blog and number of visitors posting similar queries, sometimes it is difficult to follow responses and locate them. I suggest that you reorganise this blog into 4 sections:
    1. NASA and recent events – This could be the homepage in the existing format
    2. Stock watch – This could include list of all stocks on which you wish to comment or additional queries from visitors (currently under CMCA). Some of the visitors have alreday suggested format for your views on stocks.
    3. Commodity watch – Your comments and readers queries on commodities
    4. Other investment opportunties – not covered in 2 and 3.

All these sections could be arranged monthwise i.e. subhead to particular month. Specifically for stocks and commodities, your views could be just carried over to next month and only new comments entertained in that section

    Kind regards

  23. Hi Kalidas,
Having followed your posts for nearly two years i feel that you are one of the few people ive come across who back their opinions with strong thinking and analysis. Ofcourse this is market, sometimes things go as we expect and sometimes it goes against our expectations.
Having said that, i feel that if all your stock/industry analysis is summarised as a billboard in this website that would greatly help keen followers like me. It should not be a blind ‘buy/sell’ call nor can it be a fully detailed report but a summary of your line of thinking regarding a sector or company and what basic reasons compel you take invest/sell call. Wherever applicable you could also consider providing the link to the relevant articles of yours.
I feel that this would definitely help budding investors like me to see/think and understand the thought process of experienced professionals like yourself.

    Thanks

right now, I am very busy on some important project which may be completed in 10 to 12 days. Until such time, I may not be able to do much. I can not give day to day call, but my medium to long term strategy works.

right now, I am not making very long term investment because we do not have even vision for long tem outlook due to murky atmosphere everywhere. India is still the best place to be even after some corrections. The rise in Indian market was extra ordinary.

6 years ago, the market was barely 3000 and it went to 21000 or 600%,.It has corrected 60% from top, but it is still 200% up from 6 years low.

My stock watch column will be made more precise. right now, I am short of time to write that column. One stock takes about 4 hours to analyze and I do not have that luxury at the moment.

    Kalidas Says …. Friday, February 06, 2009
I never advise on Charity. This is a personal matter. Where you derive deep satisfaction is the place that qualifies your charity

For Satyam, wait for another article. I sold at Rs 57 after having bought at 33+. I had bought at 17+ also that was sold at 37+. All small positions

there are many stocks which are more valuable than Satyam with less risk. The market is awash with such companies. Why bother Satyam? The idea is to make money – be it from Satyam or others. When others are less risky with equal reward, no need to bother about Satyam. Just read its news and throw away the newspaper

I have been reading your posts for quiet long.
I have a suggestion you may consider.

    * A general post for wealth creation for peoples in early 30′s having one or two kids.
    – Brief on insurance.
    – Brief on plans to buy house.
    – Brief on planning for children’s education.
    – Retirement planning.

  29. Sir,

    Two suggestions

    1) We need an easy way to know which query you replied recently. Something like Recent replies from Kalidas section. Since your reply is inline it is diffcult for readers to spot your replies. I like to read replies you make to others as there are many questions which i dont ask to avoid duplication.

    2) Would it be possible for you start a forum to forecast how the market will be in a short term basis based on latest developements. This avoids questions like whether i should buy this stock today or wait somemore (e.g: Q3 earing season ahead, market may be with a negative bias.. sort of a comment from you can help us). Your stock selection on a fundamental basis plus the market direction would help a investor to take a decision on the right level to enter a stock

    Thanks

There is no easy way. I as author get to see all comments at one place regardless of their appearing at various sections. I am myself consolidating each comment in the format I want, and then seek to convert into html file and have them updated every 15 days. At the end of the month there will be only one file.

A sample html file for this month you will see in sidebar under Confused Mind section – All Comments QA Jan – Update 13/1/2009. At the end of the month, I will convert them into PDF file for download or html file at reader’s choice. Write to Suggestion Box whether it is useful.

Forecasting is not possible for me. I am not 100% devoted to this site and earn bread and butter out of it. Even now, it is taking lot of my time. Further, every investor has different risk taking ability. Unless I know them well, it is impossible to guide them. I have to sit them in their mind to see how they think and behave. There are many web sites like Moneycontrol Board, which may be useful to the investors.

  34. Sir,

I think that the forum/article NASA (News Analysis Strategy Actions) has been under-utilized.
The said article’s format is so comprehensive that if it is updated frequently, it should eliminate a lot of our (your readers) repetitive questions of ‘Should I buy/hold/sell’ type and thus result in more time for you to further educate us.

Further, if NASA is incorporated into your proposed ‘Rs.1 million ideal portfolio’ article (i.e. impact of latest happenings on stocks in the ideal portfolio, example below), most of our questions will be answered, leaving only a few deserving your individual attention.

EXAMPLE (looks much better in Table Format, but can’t embed here so writing as narrative…)

    Sr. No : 1
    Stock : IFCI
    Buy Range : 12 to 31
Sell Target and Holding Period : ST: 39, 9m
    LT: 81, 18m
    CMP : 24.25
    NASA Date :5th Jan’09
    News :No News.
    Analysis : -
    Strategy : -
    Action : Hold or
    Sell 70% holding if

I fully agree with you. I was not finding enough time for that column. It will be revived soon. I have delayed the portfolio for a while because the markets have risen too fast. It may still rise by another 500 points. This is classic effect of Fund Managers is to sell December, Buy January. Mostly Americans. Looks like some funds are coming back.

NASA is a different concept. I used to follow it when I was the stockbroker. It requires lot of reading and then thinking. It is like ascertaining future long term trend. Sometime it does help short term. Normally, when the news come out, it is read by the Analyst, then hands over to his management, then they take proprietory position and then finally publish it as recommendations. This takes about 7 to 12 working days. Tips start flying around after about 10 days.

IFCI, Hindalco, RNRL and JSL are all poised to rise very fast in coming days. They may gain about 30% in next few days. Bad numbers will start coming in from 18 the January onwards (DecQ08) which will start loweing expectations and market as result.

There is a limitation on comment section to present it in the form of table. I can do that by using a useful software “text2html” a vey simple program. It requires technical knowledge, so do not bother about it.

  35. Sir,

I don’t agree with you that “If we start forum, we will end up something like MMB with lots of trashes around”. On MMB there is no control and anyone can reply to anybody but this blog is controlled one and I personally think that this can save lot of your time as well as readers time a lot. You can even have all the post together from one reader and see whether someone is repeating same thing again and again or is he asking something new ?

  36. I suggest if you can recommend a retirement planning investment mix, it will benefit lot of people like me. Now that the pensionable services no longer exist the individuals have to take their own decisions for their retirement. The pension plans , Mutual funds, or Monthly income plans have all underperformed the market. To go to a financial adviser is very risky as there are too many quacks around and I would rather trust myself and selfless individuals like you more than any ” adviser”.

I know this request could take a lot of your time but I feel it will help many of your followers. I also understand that the investment mix could be different for different age groups , but you could start with higher age group say 50 + , then 40-50 and so on.

Thanks for starting this suggestions column.

This is why sometime ago, I had asked the people to take out the FD and take loan against LIC policy to invest into high dividend yielding quality stocks. One reader from Singapore opposed that idea.

I am also transferring over Rs 3 lakhs just to invest into stocks like Ashok Leyland which gives me better returns. Within next few days, I will advise some few names. I am not suggesting now, because many have gone up by 33% to 50%.

Do not go for that kind of financial planning. Those advisers will make money out of commission out of your capital, In any case, if you give them money for investment, they will invest only in stock market – why not you do it by yourself?

  37. Dear Sir,

Is it possible to have a “thread” for each question posted on the blog. If we have a theard then it would help you as well as readers. For example if I post a query and you respond to that query. Now if I have a question either related to my above post or related to your reply then I have to mention everything in a new post where as if thread is provided, it would also help you to recall everything very easily. I hope its clear enough to understand.

You are talking about starting a forum which is not possible for present set up. This is a mere blog. If we start forum, we will end up something like MMB with lots of trashes around.

  38. Dear Kalidas Sir,

As suggested by few readers about not to answer queries for specific portfolio (due to time constraint) , i am in agreement with the thought (though I may sound selfish , as my specific PF was answered by you ), as you have provided some guideline for rebalancing the portfolio. On the similar lines you had indicated some times back you analyze the specific sector and potential stocks around them. I feel if you can even grade sector specific stocks according to there potential to perform in current market conditions (on changing conditions) this may help readers like me (& many other) to take a call for buy or sell (existing). May be the top 5 stocks in specific sector or what you feel appropriate. Or even if a sector doesn’t have a potential to grow in near future … or similar indication , can even help to be cautious. Same can apply to investment in Gold/ silver , you are the best judge to decide in the frequency of such updates/publications to all (cam say “sector watch “ like stock watch).
I don’t have a rational to justify why I am asking for sector specific , but eventually I have my investments done more in Banking sector and Oil and Gas.

If you feel my suggestion worthwhile, can be thought.

    Thanks,

Yes, you are right. this is why I had suggested the Hotel, Airlines and Auto sectors. If you carefully analyze my suggestions, they centered round those sectors, and among them Hotel Leela, Hotel Royal Orchid, Taj GVK and India Hotel in Hotel sector, then Ashok Leyland, TVS Motors and Tata Motors in Auto sectors and Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airline and SpiceJet in Airline Sectors, Essar Oil, HPCL, BPCL and IOC in Oil sector, and GSPL, Petronet, GAIL in Gas sectors and LIC HSG Finance and IFCI in Finance sectors. JSL, Hindalco are suggested in Metal sectors.

I make sectoral analysis for my own. It is beyond normal investors. I therefore give them stocks in those sectors, while broadly suggesting why am I suggesting in those specific sectors. the investors usually understand stocks, so the preference is to give them stocks. It is stock that make money for them – not sector. For them, sector is of secondary importance.

However, I will see how could I help you with your suggestions.
